What counts as ID

If you've voted in New York before, you don't need to provide ID to vote.

If you're a first-time voter who registered by mail or online and you didn't provide with your registration a New York (NY) driver’s license number, NY non-driver ID number, Social Security number, or a copy of your ID, you may need to show ID to vote. Acceptable forms include:

current and valid photo ID
copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows your name and address

If you're a first time voter and unable to provide ID: You will be able to vote an affidavit ballot.

New York lets you pre-register from age 16, so you are on the roll the moment you turn 18.

Who can register, and what you need

To register in New York you must:

be a United States citizen
be a resident of the state of New York and the county, city, or village in which you register for at least 30 days before the election in which you vote
be 18 years old (you may pre-register at 16 or 17 but cannot vote until you are 18)
not be in prison for a felony conviction
not be adjudged mentally incompetent by a court
not claim the right to vote elsewhere

Which primary can you vote in?

You are required to register with a party to participate in New York partisan primary elections. You should register with the party whose primary you would like to vote in.
